Czech election: Czechia moves sharply to the right

Britské listy.cz 21.10.2017 18:30 The general election which took place in the Czech Republic on Friday 20th October and on Saturday 21st October, was won by the authoritarian, populist oligarch Andrej Babiš, who is well known for his brutal business practices, wants to curtail the role of Parliament and interferes with the media. Although Babiš is currently prosecuted in the Czech Republic for financial irregularities, he and his ANO party have won 30 per cent  of the popular vote. The Civic Democratic Party , which has recently moved sharply to the right, has won 11,09 per cent of the vote. But most Czech political parties have assumed a nationalistic,  anti-immigration and islamophobic position. Alarmingly, the sharply anti-refugee, xenophobic and anti-muslim  SPD party of Tomio Okamura has assumed a third place with 10,84 per cent of the vote. The anti-establishment Pirate Party has received 10,55 per cent of the vote.The election has resulted in a disaster for the left wing parties. The Czech Social Democratic Party, which has to date been the senior partner in the government coalition, received only 7,37 per cent of the vote, the unreconstructed Communist Party was given 7,92 per cent of the vote.The Green Party has received only 1,43 per cent of the vote and thus has not overcome the 5 per cent entry limit for Parliament.The strongest possible government coalition would be the coalition of Babiš's ANO, the right wing ODS and the fascist SPD. Such coalition would have 126 of the 200 seats in the lower chamber of the Czech Parliament.If the strongest parties keep to their promise to avoid cooperation with the fascist SPD, the second strongest possible coalition would be that of ANO, ODS and the Pirate Party.
